There are songs that you find by accident, and then they haunt you and become an object of desire. You don’t know what the lyrics mean, nor where to find it so that you can hear it again. Sometimes, the song is one that your parents played when you were very young, and they don’t remember which one it was, leaving you stranded in piles of records if ever you were to attempt to retrace the melody that somehow came to you, so many years later. Other times, the song is one you heard in transit, during an adventurous late-summer backpacking trip, in a second-story tearoom in the Parisian backstreets. Perhaps its the snippet you caught from another car’s stereo while driving over the Austrian border, barely able to decipher one word, knowing you would never forget the melody. Maybe its the song he or she put on that old mixed-tape you still have, the third song on the second side. You still have the tape and know how far to wind it, although it wasn’t labeled. You never did think that learning how to spell in German was going to be an implicit necessity to your well-being, until that fateful day you need to hear that song again, and all the tape players you thought were still in the basement have been recycled, thrown out or sold at garage sales for under a measly five dollars. How long can you keep a song in your head? In your heart? In your eyes?
