Out of the silence, Ruby Brunton

In poetry, Ruby Brunton on July 27, 2011 at 7:08 am

The night is still, so still. No palm leaves rustling. No distant wind chime sounding in the distance. The girl sits, waiting for a call. Then, the phone rings, breaking the silence. She answers it. It is the call she had been waiting for. The call that would change everything. And there it is, spelled out in front of her. All that awaits. Contracts to be signed. And then, the additional responsibilities, meeting minutes, HR, overtime, team-building activities, micro-management, work drinks, casual Fridays, inter-office romantic relationships policy and time in lieu.

The call that would change her life. When she looks in the mirror she sees her hair has turned white from fright.
